Shift Your Mindset To Quit The 9 To 5

If you want to quit the 9 to 5 it’s not going to happen overnight, period. It’s going to take blood, sweat and tears to get you there. It could take you months if not years to achieve this, but with any adventure, you need to start somewhere. Some of you may be thinking ‘there’s no way I can do that, I don’t have the skills, or the entrepreneurial mind to pull off anything like that’. There’s your first issue, and that’s what we’re going to focus on in this article. Remove the self-doubt, remove the word ‘I can’t’ from your vocabulary and start shifting your mindset.

Write Down Your Core Values

They say what you send out into the world, is what you attract, and we’re firm believers of this. If you constantly are putting out negatives thoughts, self-doubt, low self-esteem, and thinking you’re not good enough… nothing is going to change. Your first step is to have a good look at yourself and decide what your core values are. For example, some of our core values are as follows:

  • Honesty
  • Positive outlook
  • Strong work ethic
  • Kindness
  • Resilience in difficult times
  • Integrity
  • Remain ambitious and spread compassion

This is really going to make you think, so spend some time writing these down. Use our Core Values printable to write down your 10 core values. (click the button below). You’ll carry these core values through every endeavour you choose to embark on. They will help keep you grounded when times get tough. If you’re having some trouble and need a little inspiration to get you started, we’ve got a list of core values you can glance at – just click the button below.

Core values become the fundamentals of your identity, so if you’re looking to quit the 9 to 5, you’ve got to set the groundwork first. Just write down 10 that you can really focus on and will make a priority.

Did you write down 10? If not, keep thinking. Now, we’ve got another little activity for you. Grab a blank piece of paper and write down words that describe you. Not how your friends or family would describe you, but purely from your point of view. Remember, there are no rules, so just write anywhere on that page, write vertically, horizontally, get creative! For example we might write some of the following words:

  • Ambitious
  • Passionate
  • Intelligent
  • Worthy
  • Funny
  • Driven

Words that describe who you are! Your page should be full.

It’s not full? Then you’re not finished. You’re worth more than a blank sheet. Fill the page.

The Goal

These exercises are going to help you build your confidence, get in touch with what you stand for, and will set the foundation for shifting your mindset. The goal is to get you to start thinking differently. Just by changing how we approach situations, (approach life) is going to start allowing you to think outside-the-box. As they say, nothing good ever happened in your comfort zone.

Being in our mid-20’s, we definitely feel a bit of pressure to do something different, and not conform to the rules that you should go and get a job that works you from 9-5. Having said that, we understand the necessity to hold a 9-5 job and the perks that come with it, and we’re not exactly complaining. But we do have an urge to one day have the freedom to remove ourselves from that environment (even if it’s years later). The ultimate goal is to achieve success with something we are passionate about.

We want to learn as much as we can. We want to build something that matters and impacts the community in a positive way. Ask yourselves, is that something you want too?
